How to Celebrate the New Year

Generally, people celebrate the beginning of the year to start a fresh calendar year. The new year typically is celebrated at the beginning of the month, but it can also be celebrated at any time during the year.

Romans had made promises to Janus

Then, throughout the years, Romans made promises to Janus to bring the year into a new beginning. They offered sacrifices Janus to exchange gifts for New Year's Day. They also made a resolution and usually it was an assurance of good behavior for the coming year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces One that was looking forward in the direction of the future, while the other one looked backwards to the year before. Janus was the protector of bridges, doors, and thresholds. His two faces enabled him to see to the future while looking backwards at the same time.

According to ancient legends an important task to make on New Year's Day was to adopt a resolution. Essentially, this was to pledge good behavior to God throughout the year.

Ancient Egyptians

Celebrating festivals in Ancient Egypt were not just meant to increase its influence and wealth they also elevated their people to a spiritual level. The festivals also highlighted how life cycles are cyclical.

Egyptians were the first to establish a calendar following the solar year that was comprised of 3 seasons. The calendar of their civil government was broken down into twelve month that had thirty days each. Each month was named in honor of one of the major festivals that occurred during the month. On these days, the state provided food and alcohol for the citizens. Priests sang hymns, served gods and performed ceremonies to ensure the gods their goodwill.

A firework display can be seen in many places to repel evil. Dancer dances may also be danced to bring luck.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the summer, the winter,, and finally the spring. Each of the seasons has its own meaning. Summer is the moment of those Nile River floods. During this time there are prayers recited in order to pray for the rise to the Nile River waters.
