How to Celebrate the New Year

The majority of people celebrate the beginning of the year as a time to welcome the new calendar year. Traditionally, the new year is celebrated at the beginning of the month, however, it is also celebrated at any time of the year.

Romans kept promises for Janus

Then, throughout the years, Romans made promises to Janus to start the new year. They made sacrifices Janus in exchange for gifts at New Year's Day. They also made resolutions generally in the form of a promise to behave well for the coming year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces one of which was forward-looking and the other that looked backwards into the past year. Janus was the guardian of bridges, doorways and thresholds. His two faces allowed him to look towards the future and the back at the same time.

According to the ancient legend what was the primary thing to take this New Year's Day was to create a resolution. In essence, it was an offer of goodwill to God for the coming year.

Ancient Egyptians

Observing festivals in Ancient Egypt is not only a way of increasing the influence and wealth of the country, it also elevated people to a higher spiritual level. The festivals also highlighted the cyclical nature of life.

Egyptians calculated the calendar of the year by observing the solar cycle comprising 3 seasons. The calendar of their civil government was partitioned in twelve months of three days every month. All months were named after one of the major festivals that took place in that month. During these festivals, the state provided food and drink for the people. Priests recited hymnsand served the gods, and conducted ceremonies to ensure the gods' goodwill.

Chinese

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in China. It is celebrated over a number of days, typically from January 21 through February 20 on the Chinese calendar.

Prior to Chinese New Year People prepare their homes and go to visit relatives. They also enjoy special meals and participate in rituals. The belief behind these rituals is that they clean the home from unlucky luck and to eliminate evil spirits.

There are fireworks lit throughout the places to repel evil. Dancer dances also are used to bring luck.

This Chinese Year of the Dragon also marks the beginning of spring. Year also signifies the start of spring. People send good luck wishes, and pray for a fruitful harvest.

Coptic

The oldest calendar among all among them, among them, the Coptic New Year is among the oldest. It was based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. It also has its own spiritual flavor.

This Coptic New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Thout. It is also called The Feast of the Martyrs. It celebrates the sacrifices of martyrs and the beginning of the new year. The celebration also pays tribute to those who professed faith their whole lives. Churches also dedicate this day as the Feast of the Cross, which is celebrated on the 17th of the month.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the winter, the summer and then spring. Each season has a distinct significance. The summer season is known as the season of it being the time of Nile River floods. During this time the prayers are recited to ask for the rise levels of Nile River waters.

German

The traditional German new year is celebrated on December 31. This is referred as the Silvester. The name is derived from the fourth century pope Sylvester I. The feast day of Sylvester I is also celebrated on this day.

In the month of Silvester, Germans make preparations to welcome the new year. They eat, drink and present gifts that bring luck. They also wrap themselves in different luck charms.
