It is generally accepted that people mark the beginning of the year to welcome a new calendar year. Traditionally, the new year commences at the start of the month, however, it can also be observed at any point of the year.

Romans have made promises of Janus

Over the years, Romans made promises to Janus for the coming year. They made sacrifices in honor of Janus to exchange gifts for New Year's Day. They also made resolutions, which was usually an assurance of good behavior in the coming year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces one that looked forward, and one that looked toward the past. Janus was the guardian of bridges, doorways and thresholds. His two faces let him to look into the future and backwards at the same time.

In the time of ancient mythology, something that was crucial you could complete during New Year's Day was to establish a new resolution. It was basically an act of oath to God in the coming year.

Ancient Egyptians

Festivities in Ancient Egypt could not be just an opportunity to increase their influence and wealth, it also elevated individuals to a greater spiritual level. These celebrations also stressed the cyclical nature of life.

Egyptians made their year count by observing the solar cycle consisting of all-year-round 365-days and three seasons. The civil calendar of the Egyptians was broken down into twelve month with 30 days per month. Months were named in honor of the main festival that took place in that month. In these celebrations, the government supplied food and drinks to the public. Priests performed hymns, offered food to gods and performed rituals to ensure the gods' goodwill.

Chinese

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China. It is celebrated for a few months, and usually runs from January 21 through February 20 on the Chinese calendar.

The day before Chinese New Year everyone prepares their homes, and they visit relatives. They also enjoy special meals and perform rituals. These rituals are believed to clean the home from bad luck and dispel evil spirits.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: summer, the winter, and spring. Each season has its own significance. In the summer, it is the time for that of the Nile River floods. In this season the prayers are recited to ask for the rise tide of Nile River waters.

The traditional German New Year is traditionally celebrated on December 31. This is referred to as the Silvester. This name is from the fourth century pope Sylvester I. His feast day is also celebrated on this date.

During the Silvester, Germans make preparations for the new year. They drink, eat, and offer gifts of luck. They also carry various good luck charms.

A German New Year celebration is an amalgamation of animistic rituals. Feuerworks are an additional part of the celebration. They may be privately or government-sponsored. They can be loud and sparkling or delicate and calm. All over the world, people enjoy fireworks.
