How to Celebrate the New Year

Typically, people observe the new year as a time for welcoming in a brand beginning of a new year. The new year typically starts at the first of the month, however, it could also be celebrated at any time during the year.

Romans have made promises of Janus

Then, throughout the years, Romans made promises to Janus to start the new year. They made sacrifices for Janus as well as exchanged presents on New Year's Day. They also made a resolution, which was usually with a promise of good behavior during the next year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces with one face looking forward and one that was looking backwards to the year before. Janus was the protector of bridges, doorways and thresholds. His two faces allowed him to gaze towards the future and the back at the same time.

According to ancient myth that among the top things you could accomplish the day of New Year's Day was to adopt a resolution. This was in essence a pledge of good behavior to God for the next year.

Ancient Egyptians

Celebrating festivals in Ancient Egypt could not be only a way of increasing your country's influence and wealth as well as elevating people to a higher spiritual level. These festivals also stressed the fact that life is cyclical.

Egyptians determined the length of the year by the solar cycle which comprised an 365-day calendar and three seasons. Their civil calendar was organized into twelve weeks of 30 days per month. The month of each month was named after the main festival that occurred in that month. These festivals were celebrated when the government provided food and beverages for the population. Priests sang hymns, served gods and performed rituals to secure the gods their goodwill.
