How to Celebrate the New Year

Typically, people observe the new year to mark the start of a New calendar year. In the traditional calendar, the year of the new commences at the start of the month, however, it can also be celebrated at any time of the year.

Romans made promises to Janus

Through the years, Romans made promises to Janus to start the new year. They offered sacrifices to Janus in exchange for gifts at New Year's Day. They also made a resolution generally a promise of good behaviour during the next year.

According to Roman mythology, Janus had two faces one that looked forward and the other that looked forward into the past year. Janus was the protector of bridges, entrances, and thresholds. His two faces enabled him to see both forward and backwards while looking forward.

According to ancient myth, The most significant thing to complete at New Year's Day was to take a vow. Essentially, this was an act of oath to God in the coming year.

Ancient Egyptians

It was believed that the celebrations of Ancient Egypt didn't just meant to boost its influence and wealth however, it also helped elevate people to a more spiritual level. The festivals also highlighted the importance of cyclical life.

Egyptians were the first to establish a calendar by the solar cycle which comprised an annual calendar of 365 days, and three seasons. The calendar of their civil government was divided into twelve months that had only thirty or more days. Months were named after the main festival that took place during that month. In these celebrations, the state provided food and drink for the people. Priests sang hymns, fed the gods, and performed rituals that guaranteed the gods' goodwill.

Chinese

Xin Nian, also known as the Chinese New Year, is the most important holiday in China. It is celebrated for a period of months, and usually runs from January 21 through February 20 in the Chinese calendar.

In the days leading up to Chinese New Year The Chinese New Year is when people make their homes, and they visit relatives. They also feast on special food and perform rituals. These rituals are believed get rid of the home of negative luck and remove evil spirits.

The firework display is lit in numerous areas to scare away the evil. Dances of the dragon are performed to bring good luck.

This Chinese New Year also marks the beginning of spring. People send good luck wishes, and pray for a prosperous harvest.

Coptic

Amongst all the ancient calendars, that of Coptic New Year is among the oldest. It was based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. It also has its own spiritual flavour.

It is believed that the Coptic New Year is celebrated on the first day of the Egyptian month of Thout. It is also known as the Feast of the Martyrs. It is the celebration of martyrs' sacrifice, as well as the beginning of the new year. The festival also celebrates those who had faith in Christ for their entire lives. The church also reschedules every year the Feast of the Cross, which is celebrated on the 17th day in the month of March.

The Coptic calendar is divided into three seasons: the summer, winter, along with the spring. Each of the seasons has its own significance. In the summer, it is the time for flooding of Nile River floods. In this season the prayers are recited to pray for the rise of the Nile River waters.

German

The traditional German new year is celebrated on the 31st of December. The celebration is known as Silvester. The name is derived from the fourth century Pope Sylvester I. His feast day is also celebrated on this date.

During the Silvester, Germans make preparations for the coming year. They drink, eat, and give presents of luck. They also wear different luck charms.

The German New Year celebration is filled with a variety of animistic rituals. Fireworks also form a major element at the time of festivities. These may be private or even government-sponsored. They may be bright and loud, or subdued and subtle. Everyone around the world are using fireworks.
